The Expertise AI Can’t See

Darko Brzica on the new role of SEO

Drawing on Darko Brzica’s work in SEO since 2012 and recent evidence from three contrasting client projects at Occam Digital, this case study examines why modern SEO must uncover what a business knows, connect it with what customers need, and make that relationship understandable to search engines and AI.

The strategic shift

AI Is Changing What SEO Professionals Are Responsible For

The most valuable information a company could contribute to AI search may already exist, but remain invisible.

It may live in an engineer’s explanation, a lawyer’s assessment, a product specialist’s comparison, or an answer that a sales team provides every week. The business possesses the expertise, and prospective customers need it. But if that knowledge has never been extracted, verified, and clearly published, neither conventional search engines nor AI systems can reliably retrieve or represent it.

This gap is redefining the role of SEO.

“The business knows the answer but may not realize that the question needs answering. The customer has the problem but may not know how to articulate it. The SEO professional must understand both sides well enough to connect them.”

Darko Brzica, Founder of Occam Digital

Darko has worked in SEO since 2012 across ecommerce, SaaS, artificial intelligence products, gaming, affiliate marketing, complex B2B, consumer privacy and cybersecurity, professional services, and regulated industries.

Some businesses sell directly online. Others depend on subscriptions, affiliate audiences, quotations, consultations, dealer networks, or long research and sales journeys. Through Occam Digital, he can compare how changes in search affect these environments at the same time, helping separate short-lived tactics from patterns that recur across industries.

The three anonymized examples examined here cover industrial electrical equipment, consumer legal services, and premium architectural products. Their differences make the recurring pattern easier to see.

“The surface problem can look completely different from one industry to another. But the SEO challenge is often the same: the customer’s question is incomplete, the business holds knowledge that is not yet visible, and someone has to build the connection.”

Earlier in Darko’s career, much of the competitive advantage came from making pages more accessible, relevant, and better optimized than what already ranked. Those requirements remain, but they are increasingly the entry point rather than the complete job.

Modern SEO must also interpret the problem behind a query, identify expertise absent from the website, organize it around a customer decision, and connect it with credible authority signals. It must then determine whether improved visibility produces a meaningful business outcome.

For Occam Digital, this is an expansion rather than a replacement of SEO. Technical accessibility, information architecture, internal linking, and authority remain essential. AI-assisted search adds greater pressure to make useful knowledge explicit. A system cannot retrieve a distinction that has never been explained, cite evidence that has never been published, or represent a company accurately when its website contains only generic claims.

The Occam Digital method

Before AI Can Retrieve Expertise, SEO Has to Find It

Our approach begins by revisiting existing content before automatically commissioning more. We look for pages that rank or attract relevant visitors but fail to represent what the client genuinely knows.

Five-step Occam Digital SEO process: discover, verify, structure, connect and measure business expertise
  1. 01
    Discover

Identify the customer’s incomplete questions and what the existing website fails to explain.

  2. 02
    Verify

Obtain the missing knowledge from the appropriate people inside the business.

  3. 03
    Structure

Organize that knowledge around real comparisons, conditions, and decisions.

  4. 04
    Connect

Relate it to relevant products, services, pages, and authority signals.

  5. 05
    Measure

Evaluate conventional visibility, AI inclusion, customer behavior, and commercial outcomes separately.

The answers may come from founders, engineers, lawyers, product specialists, support teams, salespeople, or project managers. The SEO professional is not expected to replace those specialists. The role is to ask informed questions, recognize useful knowledge, and translate it without removing the distinctions that make it accurate.

“Before AI can retrieve a company’s expertise, the SEO team has to retrieve it from the company.”

This differs from content production built primarily around volume. The objective is not to make existing pages longer. A useful revision may remove repetitive copy and replace it with one meaningful distinction, a verified figure, a practical limitation, or an expert explanation.

Generative AI can assist with research, organization, synthesis, and drafting. It cannot create genuine company experience from generic source material. Producing generic information more efficiently only creates generic content faster.

Evidence across three markets

The Same SEO Responsibility, Three Different Business Outcomes

The client identities are withheld, but the information problems, measurement windows, and commercial effects are presented directly.

Case 01 Consumer legal services

The clearest commercial effect was not generating the largest possible number of leads. It was reducing the wrong ones.

Our work with a multi-location consumer law firm focused on tenant rights and unsafe housing conditions revealed a gap between the language of the prospective client and the language of the professional.

People searched around what they could experience: an infestation, persistent dampness, unsafe stairs, possible exposure to a hazardous substance, or a landlord who had not addressed a serious problem. The firm understood the professional distinctions and the boundaries of the matters it handled, but much of that knowledge became available only after someone called.

We brought more of that explanation forward. Existing content was reorganized around the conditions people experienced, the questions they needed answered, and the information that affected the next step. The pages also became clearer about what the firm did and did not cover.

  • Callers understood the relevant issues more accurately.
  • They formulated more precise questions and arrived with more realistic expectations.
  • They recognized more clearly whether the firm handled their type of matter.
  • The intake team reported fewer calls concerning services outside the firm’s scope.

“Better SEO does not always mean generating the largest possible number of inquiries. Sometimes it means helping the right people recognize that the service is relevant, while helping everyone else understand that it is not.”

Mid-September 2026 compared with the equivalent period in 2025. The trajectory was volatile, but visibility remained materially above the prior-year level.
Case 02 Premium architectural products

Product Taxonomy Is a Public Expression of Expertise

A complex product system becomes easier to retrieve when its internal logic is made explicit.

Our work with a premium architectural-products manufacturer involved handcrafted door, cabinet and window hardware, kitchen and bath products, lighting, bronze tile, home accessories, collections, finish options, specifications, and installation resources.

The company served architects, interior designers, dealers, builders, hospitality professionals, and property owners. The problem was not a shortage of products or expertise. The relationships among categories, applications, finishes, configurations, and buyer needs were not always sufficiently explicit across individual pages.

We revisited category, product, and informational content to make those relationships easier to follow. Selection context was added where buyers needed to distinguish among options, and informational pages were connected more clearly with relevant categories and products.

This changed the role of taxonomy. It was no longer only a navigation system or technical SEO structure. It became a public representation of how the manufacturer understood its own products.

“Tables and structured sections are not shortcuts for pleasing AI. They reduce ambiguity when the information itself contains genuine relationships or comparisons.”

Structure cannot rescue generic information. Its value comes from making genuine expertise usable.

Case 03 Industrial electrical equipment

Technical Knowledge Became More Valuable When It Reflected the Sale

The content became more useful when it began to resemble the structure of a real technical sale.

A prospective customer might know that a transformer had failed, a project was delayed, or temporary equipment was required. The supplier needed additional information: specifications, compatibility requirements, operational urgency, and whether purchase, repair, or rental offered the most viable response.

Previously, much of that knowledge was concentrated in technical and sales conversations. Website content could describe the equipment and services without fully reflecting the information exchange required to reach a workable solution.

Occam Digital began working with the company at the beginning of 2026. We connected operational situations more clearly with the specifications and alternatives that shaped the recommendation. We also strengthened the relationships among equipment sales, repair, rentals, applications, and industries.

What happened? What is known? What is missing?Which options remain? What comes next?

The timing gives us a strong basis for associating the development with the SEO program because our work began near the start of the measured rise. The figures do not establish that every AI Overview appearance produced a conversion, but they show that substantial growth in AI search visibility and total conversions occurred during the same period of agency-led improvement.

What the evidence shows

One Visibility Metric Can Represent Very Different Success

For one client, success may be a completed purchase. For another, it is a technically viable quote request. For a professional-services firm, it may be a better-informed consultation and fewer calls from people the firm cannot help.

Business model Information problem AI Overview development Wider effect
Industrial electrical equipment Operational urgency was not fully connected with technical requirements and commercial options. Approx. 700–850% growth from the beginning of the engagement through mid-September 2026. 65% more total organic conversions.
Consumer legal services Customer experiences and professional classifications were insufficiently connected. Approx. 170–200% growth, mid-September 2026 versus the equivalent 2025 period. Better-informed calls and fewer irrelevant inquiries.
Premium architectural products Product categories, applications, finishes, and buyer needs required clearer relationships. Estimated 300–400% growth, mid-September 2026 versus the equivalent 2025 period. Broader visibility across the product ecosystem.

“No single content template would work across these businesses. The repeatable element was our responsibility to understand the customer, understand the provider, and build a supportable connection between them.”

Beyond owned content

The New SEO Role Extends Beyond the Website

Occam Digital’s portfolio spans ecommerce, industrial B2B, SaaS, artificial intelligence products, gaming, affiliate marketing, consumer privacy and cybersecurity software, legal and professional services, financial and regulatory services, healthcare, education, travel, and local-service businesses.

These companies do not convert in the same way. Comparing them allows us to examine not only whether visibility increases, but how better information changes the customer’s next step in different commercial environments.

The responsibility includes technical enablement, interpretation of customer demand, investigation of business expertise, information architecture, authority building, and the connection between visibility and commercial outcomes. These are not isolated services. They are parts of the same process.

The work also extends beyond a company’s own domain. Search and AI systems encounter brands through professional profiles, industry publications, interviews, reviews, and other independent references. These sources help corroborate what an organization says about itself.

For that reason, digital PR, expert positioning, and entity consistency increasingly overlap with SEO. The goal is not to repeat the same promotional claim across the web. It is to establish a coherent and supportable relationship between a person or company and the subjects on which they possess genuine expertise.

Measurement must expand as well. Rankings and traffic remain important, but they sit alongside AI Overview inclusion, citations, brand mentions, qualified engagement, lead quality, conversions, and sales-pipeline contribution. An AI appearance is not automatically a recommendation, and it does not automatically create commercial value.

“Mechanical SEO is not entirely obsolete. Mechanical SEO on its own is.”

Repeatable processes remain necessary for technical checks, content inventories, internal-link reviews, and measurement. What is becoming less defensible is treating them as the complete strategy in an environment where generic content can be produced cheaply and at scale.

For business owners, this changes what they should expect from an SEO partner. The relationship should extend beyond keyword lists, technical tickets, and a monthly quantity of articles. A capable SEO team should identify where the website underrepresents the company, which internal knowledge could create meaningful differentiation, and how search visibility connects with a real business objective.

A practical test

The Competitive Advantage Is Understanding

Before publishing more, companies should ask eight harder questions.

The rise of AI search has created pressure to find new tactics. The more durable response begins with something older and more difficult: understanding the customer and the business well enough to connect them accurately.

“In the AI era, the brands that understand their customers most clearly also become easier for machines to understand and represent accurately.”

  1. 01

Could this content have been written without access to our people?

  2. 02

What do we repeatedly explain only after someone contacts us?

  3. 03

Does the page reflect the customer’s problem or only our terminology?

  4. 04

    What information changes the recommendation?

  5. 05

What should the person understand or do next?

  6. 06

Which evidence, examples, or expert insights can only we contribute?

  7. 07

Is that knowledge technically accessible and clearly structured?

  8. 08

Are we measuring qualified visibility and commercial outcomes rather than output alone?

New content remains necessary when a company needs to address a distinct intent, introduce a product, or make valuable expertise available for the first time. The change is to stop treating publication volume as the default definition of progress.

That does not mean writing for AI systems at the expense of people. Information should be built around real customer needs, supported by real expertise, and expressed with enough clarity that machines do not have to infer relationships the business could have explained directly.

The most differentiating information may not begin in a keyword tool. It may begin with the question an engineer asks before approving a specification, the distinction a lawyer explains during a consultation, the comparison a product specialist makes for a buyer, or an insight a sales team has accumulated across hundreds of conversations.

“AI is not eliminating the need for SEO. It is increasing the value of SEO professionals who understand the business and its customers deeply enough to make real expertise visible.”

The new role of SEO is therefore not merely to help pages rank or brands appear in AI answers. It is to build an accurate, useful, and measurable relationship among customer demand, business expertise, and the systems through which that expertise is discovered.

Methodology, confidentiality, and measurement notes

The examples in this analysis are drawn from active or recent Occam Digital client engagements. Client identities have been withheld, and outcomes are presented in aggregate or approximate form where necessary to preserve confidentiality.

AI Overview visibility was assessed using Ahrefs Organic Keywords data with weekly reporting, all locations, and the SERP-feature filter for queries where the target domain was included in a Google AI Overview. The industrial-equipment comparison covers the beginning of Occam Digital’s engagement in early 2026 through mid-September 2026. The legal-services and architectural-products comparisons evaluate mid-September 2026 against the equivalent period in 2025.

Percentages are approximate because they were calculated from Ahrefs visibility charts rather than raw exported values. The figures represent estimated keyword inclusion, not Google-reported impressions, clicks, or recommendations. AI Overview visibility can fluctuate as search results and third-party databases change. The reported 65% commercial increase refers to total recorded organic conversions, not conversions attributed exclusively to AI Overviews.
